DAF vs. equity calculator

Charitable capital and personal wealth. Different ownership, different outcomes.

Your scenario

Illustrative default $0. Enter only an advisor-confirmed usable amount.

For an immediate stock sale; include applicable NIIT and state taxes.

Investment assumptions

Multiple of invested capital, not company valuation. 0× is a total loss.

Fee assumptions

Illustrative 1% default, not a quoted sponsor or SuperSolanova fee.

Applies annual proportional erosion to terminal value. Reports lost terminal value, not cash invoices or how an illiquid holding pays fees.

Advanced tax and timing assumptions

May differ from the current tax rate.

Optional eligible equity exemption, such as QSBS. Defaults to $0; capped at positive exit gains. Eligibility, exclusions, and tax treatment are not determined here.

0 = contribution year. Later use is not guaranteed; confirm carryforward eligibility and the usable amount with your advisor.

Illustrative 0% default. Discounts future balances and deduction savings; does not change tax liability.

All starting values are illustrative. Entries stay in this browser session and are not submitted or saved.

Defining Impact

Charitable capital measures funding capacity, not lives changed, grants made, or guaranteed social impact. Philanthropic proceeds remain charitable; personal equity proceeds belong to the investor.

Reinvestment and future grants depend on an eligible charitable intermediary, sponsor approval, and the actual structure.

The important fine print

Educational U.S. illustration, not tax, legal, or investment advice. DAF contributions are irrevocable. The sponsor owns the assets; donors may recommend but cannot withdraw funds or receive investment profits. Existing DAF allocations create no new deduction.

Tax assumptions and calculation method

Deduction: advisor-entered usable amount × effective benefit rate, assigned to the selected year. No automatic tax-return calculation or carryforward schedule. Eligibility, itemization, AGI limits, other gifts, valuation, substantiation, and state rules matter. From 2026, the 0.5% AGI floor and top-bracket itemized-deduction limitation can reduce benefits; DAF gifts generally do not qualify for the non-itemizer deduction. A later deduction requires advisor-confirmed eligibility and usability.

Stock: eligible public stock held more than one year, donated directly, with no donor sale tax. Equity assumes immediate sale, positive embedded gain × current tax rate, then investment of the remainder. Loss-asset tax benefits and unusual securities are not modeled.

Exit: invested principal × exit multiple; 0× is total loss. Equity tax = positive exit gain less the capped advisor-confirmed excluded gain, multiplied by the exit tax rate. Exclusions such as QSBS require independent eligibility review; different tax treatment of nonexcluded gains may require an adjusted rate. Equity profit is net proceeds minus the original capital committed. No tax benefit for losses is modeled.

Fees: proportional mode uses allocation × multiple × (1 − fee rate)^years; its fee drag is a terminal-value difference, not cash fees paid. Reserve mode budgets upfront fee + years × (original allocation × annual rate + fixed annual fee) in non-growing charitable cash before investing the remainder. The budget is fully spent by exit, including in a total loss; insufficient reserves trigger a warning. Lost terminal value compares with investing the entire allocation without fees. Neither mode represents a verified sponsor schedule, annual valuations, fee tiers, partial years, or performance fees.

Existing DAF alternatives: grant now equals the allocation before any unmodeled distribution fees. Retained portfolio uses principal × (1 + annual return)^years with the same selected fee convention. The alternatives are nominal dollars at different dates, not measures of impact. When a positive discount rate is entered, future balances are divided by (1 + discount rate)^years.

¹ Economic donor cost: original contribution minus deduction savings and stock tax avoided relative to an immediate sale. It is not the amount contributed, a cash refund, or comparable to capital retained in personally owned equity. Present-value cost discounts deduction savings by the selected deduction year. Savings are not reinvested.

* Charitable exit tax: assumes an eligible tax-exempt structure with no tax leakage. UBIT, pass-through taxes, distributions, interim grants, inflation, additional investment expenses, and sponsor restrictions are not modeled. Proceeds may remain with an intermediary charity rather than return to the original DAF.

No sponsor or investment approval is implied. An ordinary DAF grant cannot simply fund a for-profit founder as if it were a charity; an eligible charitable intermediary or sponsor-approved structure is required.
